Before the 2009 season kicked off we brought in a number of different Jets bloggers and writers for some Q&As about the upcoming season.
Now that the season has come to an end for the Jets we thought it would be great to bring back some of those people ...and a couple of new ones as well to talk about what we saw this season and what we think needs to be done in the offseason.
Our first guest is longtime Jets fan Marty Schupak who hosts the absolutely awesome podcast Green Rewind. If you don't already now it I strongly recommend that you go check it out!
Here are my questions and Marty's answers:
1 - Tell us about Green Rewind!
I've been a New York Jet fan since 1963. Green Rewind is a free audio Podcast I do each week during the season with a preview and game review show. We continue year round covering free agency and the draft.
We have numerous guests on the show but our regulars are:
Ralph Sharaga, a Jet fan who I have known since childhood.
Ray Clifford, from Columbus Ohio, who I met at the Jets training camp at Cortland New York.
Jeff Brenner, from Boston who I have known for over 30 years and covers the AFC East each week.
Lisa Zimmerman, who covers the Jets for CBSSports.com and is one of the best interviewers in the country.
2 - Rex Ryan had a great rookie year as HC taking the team to the AFC Championship game, but he also drew some critism for his outspoken style. What do you think about Rex Ryans first year and moving forward?
Rex Ryan comes from a coaching family. His father Buddy Ryan was very outspoken as a coach so his style is no surprise. I'm not in love with Rex's style, but it seems like the players and fans bought into it. I thought much of what he said was mainly to get the players to believe in themselves. I would bet that he slowly tones it down with each year he is head coach.
3- Mark Sanchez had a very solid start to the season. Then he struggled and cost us a couple of games but ended with a very impressive run in the playoffs. Did Sanchez live up to your expectations and what do you expect to see from him next season?
You have to be extremely happy with what Mark Sanchez gave the Jets. He did have a rough period but the interceptions should come as no surprise. If you look at other great quarterbacks and their interceptions in their rookie season, he is right there. I love his footwork and his arm strength. He hangs in the pocket well but needs to improve on seeing the complete field. This can come with experience. I expect him to improve next year but in my mind, usually year three is the true evaluation year for a starting quarterback in the NFL.
4 - The Jets have a lot of player decisions to make this offseason - Thomas Jones, Kerry Rhodes, Brad Smith, Braylon Edwards, Lito Sheppard ect. If you where Mike Tannenbaum who would be your top priority to keep around and who would you cut ties with?
Kerry Rhodes should be the first one out the door and it couldn't come quick enough. For the athletic ability he has, he has been awful the last two years. I think Thomas Jones will be gone as well as Lito Sheppard. Kellen Clemens will be gone. I would also cut ties with: Drew Coleman, Larry Izzo, Vernon Gholston (whatever the cap hit) and Steve Weatherfod.
Braylon Edwards should be back as well as Brad Smith.
5 - What positions do you think needs to be addressed this offseason in the draft and/or free agency?
We are short on the number of draft picks we have but I think we need in order of importance:
A defensive end, a defensive back, a safety, offensive lineman, wide receiver and punter.
