Ovre på HolyJoeNamath.com spurgte de forleden en række Jets-bloggere om hvem de mener bør starte på QB.Jeg var en af dem der blev bedt om at give mit besyv med, så smut forbi og se hvad der blev sagt.
For mit eget vedkommende så kan jeg kun sige at jeg skifter mening om dét spørgsmål som de fleste andre skifter underbukser, så tag det for hvad det er.

Leon og Jets tæt på at nå til enighed?

I et forsøg på at få styr på Leon Washingtons kontraktsituation har Mike Tannenbaum og Alvin Keels set en del til hinanden de sidste par dage. SAgen er nemlig den at veteranerne skal møde op i training camp imorgen, men uden en ny kontrakt kan det ende med et holdout og det er der selvfølgelig ingen der ønsker.Der kom i løbet af i går lidt spredte meldinger på hvordan forhandlingerne gik, men de fleste gik på at parterne ikke rigtigt nærmede sig hinanden, men nu skriver Hutchinson, at en kilde fortæller ham at et forlig er lige om hjørnet:
''I think something could get done in a short period of time,'' said the person. ''I'm fairly certain something will get done by the end of the weekend.''
Washington, a fourth-year pro, is believed to be seeking a deal worth roughly $6 million per season. He's pointing to contracts signed by Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (four years, $32 million, $17.5 million guaranteed) and Chargers running back Darren Sproles (one year, $6.21 million). All three are multi-dimensional running backs who can score via the rush, reception and return.
However, Washington isn't an every-down back and it's believed the two sides will compromise, with Washington ending up with a deal paying him between $4 and $5 million per season.

Another day, another guest! ... well actually todays guest is not just another guest, but none other than the great and busy Andrew Garda who is heavily involved in podcasting, blogging and who also happens to be a huge fan of the New York Jets. I recently sent him a handful of questions about Calvin Pace's suspension and what he thinks it will mean to the team. Andrew was kind enough to answer... and even through in a couple of extra nuggets!

I've been a writer in some way shape or form my whole life. I worked at the University of Southern California's Daily Trojan doing Op-Ed pieces, was a struggling screenwriter for many, many years and have been writing about football for the last eight years. I began covering just Fantasy, but expanded my work over the last two years to cover the NFL Draft for Draftguys.com and NFLDraftbible.com, the Pac-10 for CollegeFootballInsiders.com and various NFL teams for NFLSpot.com (San Diego Chargers) and BleacherReport.com (San Francisco 49ers).
The first question isn't really a question but I would like to hear what you think of this situation. Calvin Pace claims that his suspension was caused by an over-the-counter dietary supplement. We have heard this from many suspended players in the past and I have never really understood this. These players are surrounded by dietists, doctors, agents and personal as well as team trainers why don't they get those people to look at these things before they start to use them to avoid situations like this?
As far as I know, every team's trainers has a number to call to double check the ingredients in a product. Every player - and by extension all their coaches and trainers - should think not twice but four or five times about what they put in their body and they should NOT take anything without knowing 110% that it's clean. No assumptions. No guesses. No hopes. We know Goodell is dead serious about any violation. (for an example see the StarCaps case). Why screw around? There is very little excuse and maybe Pace understands that and that's why he didn't fight it.
Pace will be suspended for the first four games of the season which happens to be some of the toughest games on the schedule - at Houston, at home against New England and Tennessee, at New Orleans. What is it Pace brings to the table and how do you think missing Pace will affect the defence?
I think Pace can be replaced but it will involve some serious stepping up by the rest of the defense specifically underwhelming Vernon Gholston. Bart Scott and David Harris will take over his tackles - they were going to get more of them than Pace anyway. But Pace can make big plays and that might be what the Jets miss. On occasion, Thomas has amassed good stats (58 tackles, 19 assists, 8.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and one fumble recovery in2006)I am confident Ryan will bring the heat as often as possible against teams - especially the Pats. For New Orleans, the secondary is as important because you know Brees will throw a ton regardless of pressure. Houston wil be interesting - with Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson, they are a vertical threat but that line has been spotty on occasion, though better as the years pass. Tennessee is the toughest test - their ground game outshines the others and if the youngsters wear down, it could be a long day.
A lot of adjustments have to be made between now and game one.
We have some young and talented linebackers but do you see any of them having kind of the same skill set as Pace that might be able to play his role and hold the fort untill he is back or will Ryan and Pettine have to change their overall strategy and scheme?
I think they could - Gholston was supposed to be quite the playmaker. He'll have to be since Ryan has told him he'll start in Pace's place so it's make or break for the young conversion linebacker. could be hard for him to replace Pace's 7 sacks, 5 forced fumbles from last year since he had none of either but he's being pushed hard enough. I worried from when the team made the pick that Gholston was too much a gym product, not enough of a field producer. Here's hoping I'm wrong and Tannenbaum and Mangini were right.
As for the others, it's hard to say what impact a guy like Marques Murrell or an outside linebacker like Jason Trusnik might contribute. Like Ghloston they haven't. Parts of this linebacking corps is very young and inexperianced and haven't shown themselves to be the playmaker a guy like Pace is. Of course, some of that is experiance.
Gholston is the key. If he can step up in camp, it will go a long way towards helping the first few games. I hate to say it, but adding a guy like Derrick Brooks - a vet with some experiance - just in case would make me sleep better at night.
How will Pace's suspension affect the upcoming training camp? Will he play with the starters or will his possible replacement(s) take his place?... and if so will it set Pace back or will he be able to step right in in week 5 as if nothing happened?
I imagine they work Pace pretty hard, though he will lose some snaps to Gholston out of necessity. If that's the case I don't expect too rough a start back. It might be a little tough first game or so, but not horrible.
On the other hand if, for some reason, Ryan & Company decide to have him sit - that will be an issue. We've seen players who miss camp (due to injury like Peyton Manning or hold out like Steven Jackson) who struggle early on. It's never pretty.
But I think Ryan is smart enough to know he needs Pace this season and will work him in camp.
If the defense struggles - what does this mean for the offense?
The way Ryan and Schottenheimer are designing the offense, the defense playing well is pretty important. Either the offense will be led by Clemens (who very little experiance as a NFL starter) or Sanchez (who has very little starting experiance period) - regardless of the who, a strong run game will be needed. In order to have the luxury of running a ton, a game has to stay close.
If the defense can't generate pressure, and the team falls behind, it will be harder to rely on the run which in turn could put more pressure on either young quarterback than the staff wants. The idea - and it worked well for the Ravens last season with Flacco - is to give the quarterback as much room for growth without having to rely on them.
And like I said, both Clemens and Sanchez could use every edge in their first starting season.
But really - is there a battle between Clemens and Sanchez?
Yes and no, I think. I believe Ryan and the staff would love Sanchez to start this year. They moved up to get him and frankly, if they were positive Clemens was the guy - or really even suspected it - that would not have happened.
That said, Flacco would have sat all last year if Troy Smith hadn't gotten sick. So I believe if he feels Sanchez's long term developement would be better served by holding a clipboard in year one, don't think he will hesitate to do it. I think Ryan's old school enough to believe Sanchez has to earn his starting status. And that's a good thing.
Even in a situation which is tailor made for young quarterback success - solid defense, run-centered, low risk - sometiems it's better for a young quarterback to sit. Especially when you consider Sanchez's relative inexperiance even in college.
Covering the Pac-10 last year I saw Sanchez a ton. As the year progressed he looked better and better but I won't lie. I thought another year at USC would have benefitted him. But financially, it would have cost him a ton of money. The guy is very confident and a hard worker, two things which could make a huge difference, whether he starts in year one or not.
A little time to gain some more practice reps isn't a bad thing. But the way the offense is designed - assuming all goes as planned defensively - Sanchez probably won't have too hard a time if he gets the starting gig.

Ingen respekt til TJ

Det er ikke fordi folk kaster sig i næsegrus i støvet for Thomas Jones i denne offseason. For selvom TJ sluttede 2008 sæsonen af med 1312 rushing yards og 13 rushing TDs + 200 receiving yards, to TD catches´og en tur i Pro Bowl, så vil Jets ikke genforhandle hans kontrakt.
Dét kan jeg sådan set godt forstå... men TJ får absolut heller ingen respekt i Fantasy Football-verdenen, hvor han pt. ligger og roder rundt omkring nr. 25 på diverse RB rankings og samtidig er påklistret store bust advarsler.
Nu skal denne post ikke handle om Fantasy Football, men det giver en meget god indikation af hvad der tænkes omkring TJ før denne sæson. Her er nogle af de ting der bekymrer:
- Thomas Jones fylder 31 d. 19 august.
- Hvad enten det bliver Sanchez eller Clemens der står bag center, så er det ikke en QB som modstanerne vil respektere på samme måde som de gjorde med Brett Favre. Derfor vil TJ møde flere forsvarsspillere i boksen.
- Vil Leon Washington tage carries fra TJ?... Vil Shonn Greene?
- Vil TJs spil være påvirket af hans kontrakt-situation?
Jeg er umiddelbart ikke så nervøs over TJ, som mange af Fantasy Football-eksperterne er. TJ ér ved at blive gammel, men man skal huske på at han først for alvor begyndte at få mange carries da han landede hos Chicago Bears i 2004. TJ er derfor ikke helt så slidt som mange andre RBs på hans alder.
Punkt nummer to er nok det der bekymrer mig mest, for da Favre faldt fra hinanden sidst på sæsonen og ikke kunne kaste dybt, så dykkede TJs stats også. På den anden side så havde TJ heller ikke nogen stjerne QB i 2007 og der løb han alligevel for 1119 yards, men formåede så til gengæld ikke at komme i endzone mere end én gang og det kan potentielt blive et problem igen.
Jeg tror umiddelbart ikke at LW kommer til at stjæle ret mange carries fra TJ. Han er ikke den bedste between the tackles RB, men ekselerer når han kan få bolden med plads omkring sig. Shonn Greene der imod er stort set samme type som TJ, men jeg forventer ikke at se Greene skubbe TJ ud i kulden i år. Greene kan måske stjæle nogle goalline carries og vil sikkert komme på banen i 4. quarter, men jeg ser ham som sagt ikke tage starterjobbet fra TJ i år.
Mht. hans kontrakt-situation så bliver TJ nødt til at spille i år. Med Greene i folden vil han simpelthen blive sparket ud hvis han ikke giver alt hvad han har. Og det tror jag at han vil, for TJ har indset at han ikke har nogen forhandlingsmuligheder overfor Jets. Samtidig ved Jets også at TJs dage på holdet er talte og at de vil læne sig tungt op ad løbeangrebet i år, så hvorfor ikke bare hamre derudaf med TJ og være fuldstændig ligeglad med at slidt ned og vil være tæt på ubrugelig fremover?
Når alt dét så er sagt, så er jeg ikke den der går ud og drafter TJ i de første par runder i de mange Fantasy drafts jeg skal til at i gang med. For nok føler jeg mig sikker på at han nok skal skaffe sig sine 1100-1200 yards igen i år, men jeg forventer ikke at han gentager de 13 ture i endzone... jeg tror dog på mere end ét rushing TD som vi så i 2007.
Hvad forventer i jer af TJ i år?

Gholston starter i de første 4 uger

For et par uger siden fandt vi ud af at startende OLB Calvin Pace desværre er blevet suspenderet de første 4 uger af den kommende sæson. Nu melder Rex Ryan ud, at han allerede har besluttet at sidste sæsons førsterundevalg, Vernon Gholston, starter i stedet for Pace.
Sidste sæson var Gholston alt andet end prængende, og hans mest kendte spil var nok et hvor han jagtede Broncos QB Jay Cutler 15-20 yards for derefter ingen gang at give Cutler det hit han burde have fået. Og for at gøre ondt værre blev det til en 30 yards completion. Ikke mere af det tak!
Gennem denne off-season har Rex Ryan vist at han styrer et football hold meget anderledes end Mangini, og dette er en af de mest bemærkelsesværdige sager indtil videre. Derfor tager vi en hurtig analyse af hvad dette betyder, om Gholston er klar til at starte og om Ryan har gjort det rette.
Hvilken betydning får det for holdet at Gholston starter i stedet for Pace og er Gholston klar til at starte?
Rasmus:Jeg har svært ved at tro på at Gholston kan gå fra at være usynlig til at dominere fra den ene sæson til den anden. På den anden side tror jeg det vil hjælpe ham at Ryan tror på ham og at han skal give den gas i stedet for at tænke så meget. Jeg mener dog stadig at han mangler en del, for han kunne heller ikke få gjort arbejdet færdigt i åbenlyse kastesituationer.
Jeg er personligt bange for at Gholston ikke kan lide at det gør ondt (hverken på ham selv eller andre) og hvis ikke han får ændret det, tror jeg aldrig han kommer til at levere som vi alle håber på. Hvis nogen kan ændre det må det være Ryan, og det er trods alt opmuntrende.
Jeg mener det er et stort tab at han spiller i stedet for Pace i de første fire uger, og med et svært schedule (@Texans, Pats, Titans, @Saints), så er det et kæmpe problem - især fordi vi har brug for solidt pass-rush mod Texans, Pats og Saints, der alle elsker at kaste bolden. Lad os håbe at Gholston gør mig til skamme!
Bundgaard: Hvor meget starter Gholston er ved sæsonstart afhænger af hans præstationer i training camp og preseasonkampene og jeg bliver personligt ikke overrasket hvis der bliver roteret rigtig meget indtil Pace er tilbage. Marques Murrell og muligvis Jamaal Westermann kommer til at være en del af rotationen på OLB. Der ud over forventer jeg også at Gholston vil blive sat på banen som DE i 4-3 formationer.
Forhåbenligt resulterer udnævnelsen af Gholston som starter i at han viser væsentlige fremskridt og at nogle af de yngre og talentfulde LBere på rosteren får noget spilletid. Men uanset hvad så er jeg enig med Rasmus i at Paces karantæne er et hårdt slag for Jets forsvar. Ikke mindst fordi fraværet af Pace betyder at der formentlig må justeres i den overordnede defensive game plan.
Er dette den rette beslutning af Ryan?
Bundgaard: At Ryan allerede nu udpeger Gholston til starter er lidt af en head scratcher, men efter at have tænkt over det dagen igennem er jeg kommet op med en mulig forklaring. Gholston blæste ikke alle andre væk under mini camp og OTAs (men var vist heller ikke så ringe som Adam Schefter mener at vide), så det er altså ikke fordi at Gholston er trådt i karakter og nu er den suverænt bedste løsning. Jeg tror at Ryans udnævnelse af Gholston som starter, har det helt klare formål at sætte ham stolen for døren. Nu er det slut med at lurepasse og gemme sig bag undskyldninger om ny position og system. Gholston er placeret midt i rampelyset og der skal præsteres nu… ikke på et tidspunkt i løbet af sæsonen eller til næste år… men NU! - Hvis min antagelse hér er korrekt, så mener jeg at det er en god beslutning Ryan har truffet.
Hvis Gholston kommer i vanskeligheder, så tror jeg ikke det betyder at Ryan opgiver ham, for jeg tror ikke at Ryan for alvor forventer at Gholston nu er klar til at være full time starter, men han vil se fremskridt og han vil ikke give Gholston nogen muligheder for at gemme sig. Det lægger sig også meget godt i tråd med Ryans udtalelser om at han vil have defensive 1. rundevalg på banen i så stort omfang som muligt.
Rasmus: Jeg mener det er den rette beslutning, hvis han mener at det er hvad der er bedst for at få det maksimale ud af Gholston. Jeg kender ikke Gholstons psyke, men ud fra dette vil jeg antage at han er en person der har brug for at blive bekræftiget og troet på. Jeg håber ikke at det bliver en sovepude for ham. Jeg kan dog godt forstå at Ryan vil undgå at hente en veteran ind da det vil sende et klart signal (især til pressen) om at Gholston er på vej til at blive et bust, og det er næppe hvad Gholson har brug for, for at komme videre. Om ikke andet bliver Ryan ved med at sætte alt på ét bræt, og det er forfriskende efter tre år med Mangini.

We recently stumbled upon Joes exellent article about the Jets WRs and decided to send him a series of WR questions:
The Jets enter the 2009 season with Jerricho Cotchery as the number one receiver. Now you could argue that he was number one last year, but back then he had Laveranues Coles to take some of the pressure off of him. Do you think Cotchery is capable of being a productive number one this year?
It depends on how you define productive, he won't produce like the top flight number one receivers in the game and won't have pro-bowl caliber numbers but he will be a consistent, tough player week in and week out. Cotchery should be in the 80-85 catch, 1100-1200 yard range, similar to how he was in 2007 except hopefully he will score more touchdowns. The Jets need #89 to find the end-zone and create a few big plays with his exceptional run after the catch ability to help out their young quarterbacks.
A lot of people have Chansi Stuckey pencilled in as the starter opposite Cotchery, but is he really suited for this role or would his skill set be better utilized in the slot?
Stuckey's skill set is a much better fit for the slot than as the split end opposite Cotchery. However, as of right now he is the Jets second best overall receiver, which means he deserves the spot and the second most reps. Expect the Jets to get creative to find ways to flip him and Cotchery around in different formations to play better to Stuckey's skill set and Cotchery's versatility to play both outside and in the slot.

I don't want to say he is a lost cause because I think he has value as a gadget player/red-zone target/and special teams player but don't expect him to go out and have 50 catches this season. Smith has the size and versatility to be a valuable role player on the Jets offense. They can use him in the wildcat, use him on reverses, throw the fade ball to him but I don't think he will ever develop into a full time starter.
Wallace Wright reportedly looked good in mini camp and OTAs. Do you think he'll emerge as a receiver or is he strickly a special teamer?
Wright is a guy to keep an eye on. He had a chance to play a little receiver in 2007 and did pretty good with it. He is obviously athletically gifted because of how he excels on special teams and apparently lit it up during OTAs, catching Rex Ryan's attention. If there is a season where Wright can battle for some WR reps, this is it.
David Clowney looked really interesting last preseason. How do you think Shottenheimer plans to use him this year?
Hopefully Schottenheimer will use him as the Jets primary deep threat but also allow him to run some other routes so teams don't know the long ball is coming whenever he is in the game. Defenses will respect Clowney's speed, which will open up the deep curl and comeback for him, making him a potentially valuable weapon for the Jets offense.

We recently stumbled upon Joes exellent article about the Jets WRs and decided to send him a series of WR questions:
The Jets enter the 2009 season with Jerricho Cotchery as the number one receiver. Now you could argue that he was number one last year, but back then he had Laveranues Coles to take some of the pressure off of him. Do you think Cotchery is capable of being a productive number one this year?
It depends on how you define productive, he won't produce like the top flight number one receivers in the game and won't have pro-bowl caliber numbers but he will be a consistent, tough player week in and week out. Cotchery should be in the 80-85 catch, 1100-1200 yard range, similar to how he was in 2007 except hopefully he will score more touchdowns. The Jets need #89 to find the end-zone and create a few big plays with his exceptional run after the catch ability to help out their young quarterbacks.
A lot of people have Chansi Stuckey pencilled in as the starter opposite Cotchery, but is he really suited for this role or would his skill set be better utilized in the slot?
Stuckey's skill set is a much better fit for the slot than as the split end opposite Cotchery. However, as of right now he is the Jets second best overall receiver, which means he deserves the spot and the second most reps. Expect the Jets to get creative to find ways to flip him and Cotchery around in different formations to play better to Stuckey's skill set and Cotchery's versatility to play both outside and in the slot.

Vi har tidligere kigget på NFC North og NFC West - Vi køre ufortrødent videre er kommet frem til NFC South, der jo er en ekstra interessant division set med Jets-øjne, da vi i den kommende sæson skal møde samtlige hold.
Vi kigger som vanligt på hvorvidt vi mener at de respektive hold har forbedret sig siden sidste sæson udfra et talent-mæssigt synspunkt, men også hvordan de i det hele taget har ageret her i offseason. Hvorvidt vi tror at de respektive hold vil vinde flere eller færre kampe end sidste år holder vi stadig ude af diskussionen, da vi ellers skulle til at sammenligne schedules m.m. ... dét gemmer vi til en senere lejlighed.
Atlanta Falcons
'08 sæsonen kort fortalt: Alle forventede at Atlanta Falcons ville få det svært sidste år, men efter en '07 sæson hvor al samtale drejede sig om Mike Vick og hvor HC Bobby Petriono pakkede kufferterne og "flygtede" midt i det hele, lykkedes det rookie HC Mike Smith at vende skuden - ikke mindst fordi Falcons ramte plet med rookie QB Matt Ryan, free agent signingen af RB Michael Turner og WR Roddy Whites opblomstring. En 4-12 sæson i '08 blev således vekslet til en højst overraskende 11-5 record i '09. Forsvaret var dog Falcons akilleshæl - de rangerede som nr. 21 mod kast og 24 mod løb - og tabte i wild card runden med 24-30 til Arizona Cardinals.

Til gengæld forstår jeg så ikke helt at man vælger at lade to så gode LBs som Boley og Brookings gå... specielt ikke set i lyset af, at man vælger at bruge årets franchise tag på punter Michael Koenen... franchise tag på en punter!?!! - Min tommelfinger vender ned.
Rasmus dom: Falcons har gamblet hele deres forsvar og det bliver ganske interessant at se om det var en god ide. På den ene side har de en ung lovende quaterback som vil kunne få stor glæde af et ungt forsvar mange år i fremtiden men på den anden side er der også en del nøglespillere der er på toppen i år og næste år, og derefter nok begynder at være over-the-hill, her tænker jeg på Michael Turner (der havde lidt for mange carries sidste år), Tony Gonzales (der allerede er 33) og John Abraham (er 31). Så alt i alt mener jeg det er en sæson for tideligt at man har ryddet op i de erfarne navne, og man burde nok have holdt på i hvert fald et par af dem. Derfor vender tommelfingeren ned.
Carolina Panthers
'08 sæsonen kort fortalt: Vandt NFC South med en 12-4 record anført af et formiddabelt løbeangreb. RB DeAngelo Williams trådte for alvor i karakter og løb for ialt 1515 yards og 18 TDs, mens rookie RB Jonathan Stewart smed yderligere 836 yards og 10 TDs oven i hatten. Samtidig greb WR Steve Smith bolde for 1421 yards, men havde sværere ved at finde endzone og scorede blot 6 TDs. På Forsvaret var LB Jon Beason og DE Julius Peppers de bærende kræfter. Det gik dog lidt ned af bakke for forsvaret i sidste halvdel af sæsonen, men der mødte Panthers også nogle af NFLs bedste angreb, så det skal man måske ikke ligge for meget i. QB Jake Delhomme gjorde det ganske fornuftigt... indtil slutspillet og Arizona Cardinals kom forbi. Her kastede Delhomme hele 6 ints og Panthers sæson var slut.

Bundgaards dom: Panthers har et ganske udmærket hold... det må de ihvertfald selv mene, for de har stortset ikke rørt på sig i denne offseason - hverken hvad signings eller cuts angår. I draften landede de et steal af de større da de valgte OG Duke Robinson i femte runde - han var de fleste steder projekteret til øverste halvdel af anden runde. Til gengæld brugte de, efter min mening helt hovedløst, næste års førsterundevalg på at handle sig op efter DE Everette Brown. Havde de ikke gjort det havde jeg nok sagt at de bevarede status quo... nu vender tommelfingeren ned.
Rasmus dom: Panthers lavede to supermoves i off-season ved at holde på både T Jordan Gross og DE Julius Peppers. Men de blev trukket meget ned af to noget tvivlsomme handlinger, nemlig at give svingende QB Jack Delhomme en stor 6-årig aftale og ved, som Bundgaard nævner, for andet år i træk at bytte deres førsterundevalg året efter væk, for at få en spiller i anden runde. Jeg synes dog det trækker meget op at beholde Gross og Peppers så Panthers får en status quo herfra.
New Orleans Saints
'08 sæsonen kort fortalt: Den forgangne sæsoner må betegnes som en enorm skuffelse for New Orleans Saints, der har NFLs måske mest potente angreb, men som gang på gang må se det hele falde på gulvet grundet et vaklende forsvar og uheldige skader. Således også i 2008, hvor Saints nok havde NFLs mest scorende angreb og skaffede flere yards end nogen anden, men som samtidig sluttede sidst i NFC South med en 8-8 record. Saints måtte se RB Reggie Bush sidde ude med en skade i syv af sæsonens kampe, men fik til gengæld lidt at smile af, da RB Pierre Thomas viste at han kan være et glimrende supplement til playmakeren, der til syneladende ikke kan holde en hel sæson.

Bundgaards dom: Saints har klogeligt forsøgt at opgradere deres secondary med tilføjelserne af Jabari Greer og Darren Sharper i free agency og Malcolm Jenkins og Chip Vaughn i året draft. Mht. draften så var der mange der mente at de ville/skulle vælge RB Chris Wells i første runde, men de modstod fristelsen og tog Jenkins istedet - et fornuftigt valg i mine øjne. Jeg vil dog stille spørgsmålstegn ved visdommen i at bruge et femterundevalg på en punter, når man nu kun har fire valg at gøre godt med... men på trods af dét vender min tommelfinger op.
Rasmus dom: Saints har identificeret problemet (at deres forsvar ikke har det nødvendige niveau) og forsøgt at styrke det, og det kan man kun være positiv stemt overfor. Jeg tror dog det bedste træk og den største forbedring er ansættelsen af ny defensiv koordinator, Gregg Williams, som bør kunne forbedre enheden betragteligt. Tommelfingeren vender op!
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
'08 sæsonen kort fortalt: Selvom Bucs sluttede sæsonnen med en 9-7 record, måtte de tage til takke med 3. pladsen i divisionen og kom heller ikke i playoffs efter at have tabt sæsonens sidste fire kampe. Det kostede HC Jon Gruden jobbet kort efter sæsonafslutningen. Vanen tro spillede Buccaneers forsvar solidt og på angrebet fik de overraskende god produktion fra den aldrende RB Warrick Dunn, der nettede 1116 total yards og WR Antonio Bryant, der endelig brød igennem med 1248 yards receiving og 7 TDs.

Bundgaards dom: På mange måder kan jeg godt lide hvad Bucs har gjort i denne offseason. Under Gruden er holdet bare blevet ældre og ældre og nu måtte der snart til at gennemføres et generationsskifte - Dét ser ud til at være sat i gang nu. Alligevel er jeg ikke helt tilfreds for holdet gik ind til free agency med mere en 40 millioner $ i cap room og så synes jeg godt at man kunne have forventet at de havde landet nogle lidt større profiler. Okay, de handlede sig til Winslow, men hvor god han end er er TE så den optimale position at smide sine penge efter? At der så samtidig er snak om, at det ikke er af sportslige grunde men af økonomiske, at Bucs ikke er mere ivrige efter at åbne pengepungen, gør det ikke spor bedre. På træner siden står rookie HC Raheem Morris nu i spidsen for holdet... ham kender jeg ikke meget til... måske er han god - måske er han ikke... men at han må undvære legendariske Monte Kiffin, der forlod jobbet som DC for at følge med sønnen Lane Kiffin til NCAA og Tennessee Volunteers for mig til at føle mig noget mindre tryg ved situationen i Tampa. Min tommelfinger vender ned.
Rasmus dom: Jeg mener Bucs er det hold i hele NFL der er blevet forringet mest i denne off-season. Jeg er stort set uenig i samtlige moves. Man fyrer en legendarisk coach som Jon Gruden, og ansætter en gut der ikke har noget CV (men han er sikkert billig). Herefter følger en oprydning, men jeg synes den var lidt for dyb når man bl.a. fyrede Cato June som kun er 29. Jeg synes dog den måde man har taget nye spillere ind på er den mest kritisable. Man henter en TE der kan være en kamp fra et karriere stop for et højt draftvalg og giver ham en masse penge. Man henter en RB der har en god sæson pga. den o-line der hjalp ham og giver ham en masse penge. Man drafter en QB med kæmpe bust-risiko, for at sige det mildt. Alt peger på at Bucs er på vej i hundene (så de skal nok levere en god sæson, for når alt dette er sagt har de dog stadig en af ligaens bedste unge o-lines, så de skal nok stadig klare sig nogenlunde). Hele min arm peger dog ned pga. en række meget underlige beslutninger!

Rasmus dom: Jeg mener Bucs er det hold i hele NFL der er blevet forringet mest i denne off-season. Jeg er stort set uenig i samtlige moves. Man fyrer en legendarisk coach som Jon Gruden, og ansætter en gut der ikke har noget CV (men han er sikkert billig). Herefter følger en oprydning, men jeg synes den var lidt for dyb når man bl.a. fyrede Cato June som kun er 29. Jeg synes dog den måde man har taget nye spillere ind på er den mest kritisable. Man henter en TE der kan være en kamp fra et karriere stop for et højt draftvalg og giver ham en masse penge. Man henter en RB der har en god sæson pga. den o-line der hjalp ham og giver ham en masse penge. Man drafter en QB med kæmpe bust-risiko, for at sige det mildt. Alt peger på at Bucs er på vej i hundene (så de skal nok levere en god sæson, for når alt dette er sagt har de dog stadig en af ligaens bedste unge o-lines, så de skal nok stadig klare sig nogenlunde). Hele min arm peger dog ned pga. en række meget underlige beslutninger!

Danny Woodhead got some playing time when TJ and LW stayed away from the mini camp and part of the OTAs. Do you think he'll make the final roster?
I may have said he would have before the draft, but after the Jets traded three picks to move up and grab Shonn Greene it may be tough for him to catch on. The Jets will keep between 3 and four running backs on the roster with Tony Richardson being one of them. You have to assume that Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Shonn Greene will be the other RBs. I always root for guys like Danny Woodhead, but we cannot use a roster spot on a guy just because he is an "Underdog".
The Jets have some problems finding a TE who can block. Why did they let Chris Baker go and was it a mistake in your opinion?
Chris Baker was who he was. He was a good blocker, but not an all time great blocker. With his issues with the front office and his above average but regular pay it was a coin flip whether he stayed or go. Hind sight it always 20/20. At this point, it would be nice to have him, but who knows what we do not see. It was clear that Baker was looking for a lot more money than the Jets wanted to give, in the end, they let him walk.
We all know that Vernon Gholston is a physical freak, but he has struggled to learn the OLB position. Do you think he'll blossom under Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine?
This is a tough one, when I see pictures of Vernon Gholston, I cannot imagine what trying to block him or take a hit from his would be like. Unfortunately, it's tough to coach passion. I have brought it up numerous time, but in the game against the Denver Broncos last year, Gholston got free and chased Cutler backwards 10-15 yards, Cutler stopped to throw and should have taken a hit that would have most likely knocked him out of the game. Instead, Gholston seemed to slow down and put his hands up allowing Cutler to complete a ridiculous 30 yard pass. Any player in this league would have enjoyed a shot like that, yet Gholston seemed disinterested. The reports on him during this offseason have been up and down, with more negative reports. I'll give him this year before I wonder why we drafted him.
Is there any Jets player(s) (besides he obvious one - Dustin Keller) that you think will step up and surprise a lot of people this year?
I have a few players I'm looking forward to seeing this year. First of which is Chansi Stuckey. Not a lot of Jets fans knew much about him after being drafted in the 7th round, but he made a ton of huge plays at Clemson and plays a lot like Santana Moss. At the end of last season he really came on as a receiving threat for this team, with a chance to start or play the slot he can flourish. I also have high hopes for Mark Sanchez. He was drafted fifth overall, he played like a superstar at USC and with this defense and running game, he can step up into a solid NFL starter. He seems to get a lot of negative press but I can see him energizing this team and surprising a lot of players. There's a reason half the league was interested in drafting him.
Finally I have to ask you who you think will be the opening day starter at QB?
I have caught a ton of flack on my site for openly rooting for Mark Sanchez to start day one. My rational is simple, he traded three players, two of which were starters, and our 1st and 2nd round pick to move up and get him. He was also given $30 million in guaranteed money, which is more than 90% of the league's starting quarterbacks. I've seen Kellen Clemens play live a few times and have not missed a Jets game in 10 years, I don't see "it" with him. I completely back Mark Sanchez.

I fully respect you for wanting to see Sanchez as the opening day starter and I'm not saying that I disagree with you. However I do have some concerns/doubts. Sanchez only started 16 games in college and I'm not sure whether he is ready to start right away. I basically worry about him facing those tough opponents we start out with and fear what it will do to his confidence if he struggles in those games. On the other hand I'm not that confident that Clemens will be able to do a whole lot better. Sanchez seems mature enough and the only thing he really lacks is experience so maybe being thrown to the wolves right away is best for his development.
As you can see I'm all over the place when it comes to whether to start Sanchez or not... Thoughts?At 21. jul. 2009, 17.33.00,

I agree with you on most of your opinions, but I have one additional question (well actually two) I would like to ask you. I do think, though, that cutting guys like Baker and Coles have the advantadge that it will be easier for Sanchez to take control of the locker room.
How do you assess the strength of our o- and d-line and how do you assess the depth?

As you all know by now we have spend this offseason asking different people questions about the Jets. We have previously had Rob Nacarano of the SFJFC and Brian Bassett of TJB.

I been training everyday Monday thru Friday,... Working on things to help me become a better WR. by doing this I can help my team become better. First thing First Super Bowl.
What's the atmosphere in the Jets receiving corps like?
Lovely we all take care of one another,.. we help each other to get better.
What is your goal for the 2009 season?

Jets secondary havde deres problemer sidste år og forsvaret mod kast rangerede helt nede som nr. 29 i NFL med 234.5 tilladte yards gennem luften pr. kamp.Der er dog ingen tvivl om at det ikke var Darrelle Revis skyld og han har igennem sine to første sæsoner slået sig fast som én af de absolut bedste CBs i NFL. Han har således holdt top receivere som Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss, Brandon Marshall og T.O. i kort snor.
I år kommer Revis til at stå overfor en sand perlerække af WRs. Her følger en liste over hvad der potentielt står på menuen for Revis i 2009:

We have had the pleassure of doing a Q&A with Brian every year since 2005 and this year is no different. So without further ado lets get to the Q&As!

I remember you being pretty down after the Jets moved up to select Mark Sanchez in the draft. How do you feel about that pick now?
You could say I was more than a little beside myself on Draft Day. Looking back now, from a value standpoint, I think that the team did well to move up and get Sanchez for what they paid out, not biting into future draft classes to move up 12 spots. As far as him as a person, the kid is poised, and seems to show that he knows what it's going to take to be successful in the NFL, but until I see him in pads under the lights running for his life from Richard Seymour and Adalius Thomas, I am going to hold off on crowning him the King of New York just yet.
I still have a few areas of concern:
1) Is he the real deal? With only 16 collegiate starts, it's hard to know how well Sanchez translates to the NFL. Still playing at USC is like playing at a pro program, so that's promising.
2) Team depth? The team made their deal with the devil to get Sanchez, and left the cupboard bare in terms of depth on OL, DL, TE & WR to do so. The Jets are going to have to have a fantastic draft in 2010 to make up for the lack of personnel they were able to acquire via the draft in 2009.
3) Too soon? If Ryan chooses him to play in 2009, is it the right decision? The fact that his contract is already done is a HUGE plus for his development as a rookie. I don't see Sanchez as the type of guy who's psyche will crack if he doesn't go to the SuperBowl in his first year, but you can never tell. A lot of people thought that David Carr and Alex Smith were worth top picks ... look how that turned out.
The Jets made a trade to get Lito Sheppard to strenghten the secondary but I'm not sure he's going to upgrade the CB2 spot significantly over Lowery. How do you see their roles on the team?
I'm not much of a fan of Lito Sheppard yet either. The book on him is that he's something of a gambler, and that's not exactly the type of player you are looking for across from a top corner like Darrelle Revis. If Sheppard plays CB2, then he's going to get picked on all day long. For all Lowery's shortcomings last season, I still would feel more comfortable with him at the second spot, and think that you might see him there by the end of the season anyway. For what the team gave up to get Sheppard, you can't complain and it's clear he's motivated by money, and a big bonus from the Jets next year may be just what he needs to get his game right (at least for 2009).
I do wonder if whoever doesn't win the CB2 position will get dropped down to the #4 spot because of the team's signing of veteran Donald Strickland, a longtime slot corner in the league. I think that Lowery would be a better overall player there, but his speed issues might cause him to fall out of the rotation if he struggles against players like Welker or Ginn in the slot.
How concerned (if at all) are you about the ongoing contract disputes with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington?
I'm more concerned about Leon and his contract than Thomas Jones. Jones knows he's not going to get more money and the more he stays away, the more Shonn Greene will get his carries. Leon though, just had his first baby, and knows that this next deal is going to be the biggest of his career. The more he gets strung along by the team, the more dollars he loses. Leon's done everything they've asked him to and overdelivered at every step. If he doesn't deserve a little "rule-bending" on his contract, then this front office is cutting off it's own nose to spite it's face.
Leon is a unique player and the team doesn't have anyone who can duplicate all the small ways he can help the team. With this CBA issue looming, Mike Tannenbaum sure seems like he is trying to be cute and string along Leon for another year at minimums ... because he can. But it's just this kind of lame hardball tactic (Kendall, Baker) that always ends up biting him in the end. If Leon holds out on this team, I will go on a hunger strike in solidarity for my comrade.
C.J. Mosley left in free agency and Kenyon Coleman was part of the trade to move up for Sanchez. On the other hand the Jets went out and got a couple of veterans in Marques Douglas and Howard Green. How do you see the defensive line this season?
Is old an acceptable answer? Yes? Then old. The team desperately needs to get younger on the defensive line and that was one of the biggest disappointments in the draft. The Jets are likely going to have to deal with injuries to their defensive line this year, and I think they are ill-equipped to handle it if they do.
Especially with the suspension of Calvin Pace, I think that the team would be wise to play out of more four man fronts until he comes back. When he does, the team should still play four man fronts because Jenkins will wear down just like last year if they grind him down by too much two-gapping.
Everybody is talking about the Jets wide receiver corps. The Jets certainly have a lot of interesting but unproven players on the roster but do you think that any of them can step in and be a true no. 2 or will we see a rotation based on the situation?
I think it's going to be more rotational, but I do think that Chansi Stuckey is the guy who will put the biggest dent in Laveranues Coles' numbers from the WR corps. Clowney could be a nice deep threat for this team, but don't forget Dustin Keller and his role in this offense as a pass-catcher, some analysts forget that he was the very first WR/TE taken in the 2008 Draft and was Schottenheimer's pet project last season. With more runs anyway, I think that the Jets are more stable at WR than many are making it out. There are more pressing issues for the team to worry about, like their line-depth.

With more runs anyway, I think that the Jets are more stable at WR than many are making it out. There are more pressing issues for the team to worry about, like their line-depth.

I agree with you on most of your points, especially about CB2 and the d-line depth.
One thing where I disagree though, is on the o-line depth question. Bricks, Mangold, Faneca and Moore have a grand total of 0 missed games due to injury in their careers if I recall correctly and Woody hasn't been that injury prone either, so I feel very confident that we wont loose any of the o-line players to injury (7-9-13). Being a strong unit to begin with I also think it can cope with a injury to one of the players.
As you point out d-line is a very different story because Jenkins wears down and because rotation is needed. It will be interesting what Ryan will come up with there.At 15. jul. 2009, 22.59.00,

Good point about our d-line getting old. Actually I think the d-line looks better than last year, but the addition of Douglas and Green is not exactly an injection of youth!

UDFAs -- Of the pure UDFAs from this 2009 class, I think that former Rutgers' star Jamaal Westerman stands a very good chance at making the roster as a linebacker. Ryan seems to like him and has moved him around at different spots on the field. Punter TJ Conley (just due to lack of competition), SS Emanuel Cook (Abe Elam type) and maybe a guy like Zach Potter all have shots, mostly because of depth issues.
Scheme -- I think you are right on about the scheme. It's built to protect an offense. I do think that the Jets offense overall is better than Baltimore's was in 2008, but that the defense is worse.
Breakout -- I think Dustin Keller & Chansi Stuckey, Dwight Lowery and maybe Mike DeVito would be my picks on breakout players this season.At 16. jul. 2009, 14.10.00,

Thanks for asking me to do this in the first place, it was a lot of fun!
As far as Smith, I have no idea what to expect from him. I know he ended the minicamps well, but it always seems to me that he impresses in the springtime, but never quite follows through when September rolls around ... as far as being a pure receiver.
What I do know:
1) He has been transitioning from another position (Option QB at Mizzou) to NFL WR ... it's hard enough to be an NFL WR without changing roles so his progress has been slow
2) He's an incredible athlete. Smith can jump, run in space, and is a physical player ... he's got talent
3) He plays well when he's in isolation, but has struggled to learn how to get open.
I think if he can learn how to get open more regularly, and can continue to make tough catches, he could not only break out, but explode. Chansi Stuckey seems more equipped right now to step into a larger role, but Brad Smith could be a good auxiliary player to help lessen the loss of Coles.At 16. jul. 2009, 16.06.00,

For et døgns tid siden cuttede Jets TE Bubba Franks, der ellers var blevet hentet ind igen efter at have været en tur på free agent markedet. Franks var dog småskadet og fik aldrig chancen for at spille sig tilbage på holdet.
Nu har Jets så signet TE Richie Owens, der spillede for Minnesota Vikings fra 2004-2006 efter at være kommet til klubben som UDFA. Herefter var han et år hos St. Louis Rams men var ikke tilknyttet et NFL hold (eller noget andet hold for den sags skyld) i 2008.
Richie Owens er en stor blocking TE (6'4" og 273 pund) og har fået spilletid i ialt 53 kampe i NFL.

Det er længe siden at jeg har været forbi disse kanter, men jeg har.... øh... haft travlt. Ligesom San Diego Chargers CB Antonio Cromartie.

Sommeren er over os og Jets-spillerne slapper af inden training camp... eller gør de?Bart Scott, Dustin Keller og Mike DeVito arbejder hårdt på at få formen på plads... og her er et billede af hvad Keller drikker hver morgen - SKÅL!
Jim Leonard afholder sin årlige football camp på Flambeau High School.
Jehuu Caulcrick hjælper til ved Fundamental Football Camp på Chautauqua Lake Central School.
Drew Coleman er også aktiv i youth football camps... og vil vinde Super Bowl.
Selv Jets Flight Crew har travlt... de har nemlig lavet den første swim suit kalender i Jets historie - Ét initiativ vi her på newyorkjets.dk kun kan bifalde! (...og muligvis er hele denne post blot en undskyldning for at bringe dette link) . Desværre må vi vente helt til begyndelsen af august for at se resultatet.
Hov... og her på newyorkjets.dk holder vi ikke ferie!

Ryan og Scott mindes McNair

Dagen efter den tragiske nyhed om at den tidligere stjerne QB Steve McNair var fundet død sammen med en ung kvinde mindes Rex Ryan og Bart Scott deres to år med McNair i Baltimore.Personligt har jeg altid været en stor fan af McNair og hans uovertrufne krigermentalitet gjorde i sin tid at Tennessee Titans var tæt på at blive mit favorithold... nu blev det så Jets, men "Air" McNair har en helt speciel plads i mit NFL-hjerte.

Ifølge Schefter og hans tidligere omtalte Twitter feed, så er OLB Calvin Pace blevet suspenderet i fire kampe. Igen ifølge Schefter så har karantænen været undervejs i flere uger, men er blevet holdt hemmelig.
Grunden til Paces karantæne er brug af anabolske steroider og lignenede præparater. Pace hævder at han ikke vidste at han gjorde noget ulovligt... mmm Pace, helt sikkert!

Mig bekendt er der ingen af beat writer'ne der har skrevet specielt negativt om Gholston. Okay, de har heller ikke været overstrømmende med ros, men det er trods alt stadig kun non contact drills og så er det svært at imponere helt vildt som linebacker... har i f.eks. læst andet om Bart Scotts indsats end at han er konstant højtråbende?
Schefter skriver selv at hvis der er nogen der kan få Gholston på rette spor, så er det Rex Ryan, men hvor mange træningspas har Ryan og Gholston haft sammen - ikke ret mange... men åbenbart nok til at han allerede skulle have udrettet mirakler og at det nu derfor ser ud til at Gholston aldrig udvikler sig til andet end et bust.
